Celebrating 100 Years of Women Empowering Women

Womens Suffrage
Suffragettes making noise for the right to vote. Taken between 1910 and 1915 (Library of Congress).

A century ago women were rallying together (with some visionary men!), marching towards a shared vision, advocating for each other, and making a lot of noise for their right to vote and for our right to vote. Today, women are leading organization, companies, and countries because these brave noisemakers dared to dream that their daughters and daughter’s daughters would grow up in a world where women have equal opportunities.

March 8th, 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of women. There is a lot to celebrate but there’s more work to be done and we still need women rallying together, working towards common goals, and advocating for each other.

We still need noisemakers. Are you ready to make some noise?

White Ribbon Alliance

White Ribbon Alliance

Did you know 1000 girls and women die every day during pregnancy or childbirth? As Mahmoud Fathalla said, “Women are not dying because of diseases we cannot treat… They are dying because societies have yet to make the decision that their lives are worth saving.” The White Ribbon Alliance is one of the most vocal coalitions for maternal health, promoting zero tolerance for women dying in pregnancy and childbirth.

The Noisemakers Campaign Videos

These videos were shot in New York City at the Women: Inspiration and Enterprise (WIE) Symposium which was an event hosted by the White Ribbon Alliance during the Millennium Development Goals Summit in September 2010. Noisemakers from around the world gathered at the WIE Symposium to make noise on behalf of girls and women in developing countries. The idea for the Noisemakers Campaign hatched at this groundbreaking event. If you’d like to make your own Noisemakers video to share here, please send it our way.
