One Question That’s Going to Rock Your Business

Natalie MacNeil talks about how to delegate tasks

Have you ever stopped to wonder if you’re truly doing the right things to help your business succeed? Or if there’s another person you can delegate to who would be a better person to complete the task? I know I have, and it’s something I really struggled with. That is, until I discovered one very simple question that quickly changed the way I did business:

“Why am I doing this?

The truth is, most tasks we do as business owners are things we like to THINK we need to be doing but we could easily get someone else to do them.

If your business isn’t where you’d like it to be, maybe you’re not the right person for the job! (Click to tweet!)

In today’s episode of She Takes on the World TV, I’ll walk you through how I used this super simple question to transform my business, with powerful results! Join me for the video below:

To recap, here are the steps you can take to make sure you have the right people doing the right jobs so that your business can really soar!

  1. For about two weeks, for every task you work on, ask yourself, “Why am I doing this?” Seriously, every task.
  2. To help remember to do this, set a recurring reminder on my Google Calendar to ask yourself this question every hour during the work day. This isn’t meant to drive you crazy; I promise you’ll get big results from this!
  3. Install Jing, a free screen capture tool, and every time you find yourself doing a task that you know you can teach someone else to do, record that task in Jing and you’ll be able to send that task (along with the screen capture video tutorial) to the right team member so they can learn exactly how you get things done.
  4. Create a folder for all the screen capture videos so that anyone on your team can go through the folder and train themselves on the tasks.

My actionable for you this week is to install Jing and for every task you’re doing ask, “Why am I doing this?” And be honest with yourself. You may think you are the best person to do a task but really your time could be spent on critical revenue generating tasks. Then let me know in a comment below what task you’re ready to move off your plate now!

Even if you’re not ready for a team yet, start recording these tasks anyways, so that you’ll be all set to train a new team member once the time is right.

  1. “Why am I doing this?” … One of those great questions that can have a different meaning, depending which word is stressed. I hadn’t thought if using it in this way before.

JING is amazing, the “free” includes technical support and a ton of video tutorials on how to use it.

  2. Natalie, I loved the video! What a great idea to video tape the work with explanation – much easier and more fun than writing procedures up 🙂

  3. Fantastic tip, thank you for this! I’m just starting otu so there’s not a lot I feel like I can assign to someone else. I actually have a VA but haven’t used her as much as I promised I would because I struggled to find tasks to send her. I’m definitely going to use this advice to identify things that she can do in the future.

  4. Natalie, thanks a lot! Very simple, actionable and VERY powerful! I’m the one shop-person at the moment. I tried to hire a VA and failed as wasn’t able to properly delegate & explain what I need to get done! You advice gives me the structure for proper delegation and personal productivity!
