At a recent workshop I facilitated, a participant shared that she didn’t understand the big ‘hype’ about having a website. Though she had one; she hadn’t attained any customers from it. I explained that having a website is a good first step, but not enough to gain clients. If you are not engaging your visitors, chances are they will never return. Do you have a website but not sure how to guide traffic to it? Here are 5 ways to steer traffic to your website:

Register with Major Search Engines

An important step to steer traffic to your website is to make sure is it is listed on all the major search engines such as Bing, Google and Yahoo. This is one of the most efficient ways of directing free, targeted traffic to your website. It’s easy and takes just a few minutes of your time.

Bing

Google

Yahoo

Respond to Questions and Comments

People leave comments for a reason; they are interested in your response. By responding, you’re letting them know that you’re actively involved in reading the comments and encouraging them to visit again. In addition, this is an effective way to become known in your industry as an expert.

Develop Article Marketing Strategy

Blogging is an easy way to drive traffic to your website and establish yourself as an expert in your industry. If executed effectively, this can be a smart online marketing strategy and an affordable way to grow your business. Blogging is ‘big business’ among entrepreneurs, writers and those who just want to express themselves thru electronic communication. More and more businesses are blogging as they realize the benefits. There are several online sites where you can submit your articles for publication and back link to your website:

E-zine Articles or www.ezinearticles.com

Associated content or www.associatedcontent.com

Articles base or www.articlesbase.com

In addition, posting your articles on various social media sites is a great marketing strategy to generate traffic back to your website. Post your article using the following FREE social networks:

Facebook

Twitter

LinkedIn

Use Social Bookmarking Services

Social bookmarking sites allow you to search, organize, share and store the bookmarks of different web pages. You are also able to promote articles and stay ahead of your competitors. Here are 3 popular social book marketing services:

Digg– The ultimate social media site; it’s become notorious for producing traffic waves so massive that they can have a DOS-style impact on smaller hosts.

Stumble Upon – Helps members discover and share great websites. As you click Stumble, the site delivers high-quality pages matched to your personal preferences. These pages have been explicitly recommended by your friends or one of 8 million+ other web surfers with interests similar to you.

del.icio.us – A social bookmarking website; users can mark their favorites with del.icio.us and share them with each other; making it onto the front page of the “recently popular” section on del.icio.us will send a decent amount of traffic so long as the category you’re tagged into is popular.

Create Videos

Video marketing is all the RAVE! Whether creating how to, testimonial, product review or interview videos for your website, it increases brand awareness and creates viewer action leading to more inquiries and sales. In fact, according to Online Video Marketing Statistics, adding video to small business profiles:

Increases number of business profile views more than 100%

Increases number of profile clicks more than 30%

Increases number of calls generated by more than 18%

In conclusion, by using these FREE methods to create visibility to your website, you will be able to generate more traffic over time, thus, have a steady flow of potential leads.

In my experience, many people who are used to presenting on stage (or in front of a room), are not aware of how they need to adapt their presentation style to the technical requirements and demands of the video camera.

This includes;

♦ body positioning, body language and gestures, body movement vocal range
♦ eye-contact with the lens
♦ camera framing and camera angles
♦ backgrounds and setting the scene – to mention a few.

Stage vs. Screen

Presenting on video requires the presenter to “pull people in” (screen presence) whereas stage presenting requires the presenter to “push out to the audience.” There lies the problem for many Stage presenters. Note: this is also a common challenge for professional Stage-actors attempting to cross-over to screen and vice-versa for Screen-actors. Each need to learn/unlearn or modify their performances to suit the video or stage medium.

I see it a lot with professional speakers / presenters trying to make the crossover from stage to screen. They haven’t quite mastered the crossover to video in my observation (yes, I review a lot of video) and still struggle with the camera’s technical demands. I’ll address these demands in future articles. In the mean time to get you started, check-out the above links to help you with your online video presentations.

Also, I would love to hear from you! Let me know in the comments below, what your biggest challenges are when it comes to presenting on video – or with creating your own Video Presentations? If this is all new for you, share with me what you found most helpful with this article and how you will implement it in your next video?

Always listening and cheering you on with your online video presentations!

Pinterest /Pin-ter-est

noun (place/thing), verb (in the form of repinning)

1. NY Times definition: a pinboard for online photos. You ‘pin’ photos onto a virtual corkboard based on your interests.

2. To pin a series of photos on various pinboards created by you exclusively. I decided to start repinning blueberry pie and oatmeal cookie pictures onto my Easy Baked Eats pinboard.

Pinterest holds the distinction of being the fastest website in history to crack 10 million visitors a month, no mean feat for a site that started off strictly invitation-only (now users may join via Facebook or Twitter). It even holds the reputation of being referred to as “Facebook for nice people.” Ready to join in on the frenzy? These three reasons will have you on pins and needles to try it out.

It’s Easy

Add the ‘Pin It’ button to your bookmark bar. Pick an image from the web page you like, choose a board to feature it on, write a caption, and click ‘Pin It.’ Et voila, your visual scrapbook has been created! Nothin’ to it.

Endless Pleasant Options

You’ll easily be able to find board after board of beautiful photos grouped together by theme (many of which include weddings and DIY). Pinterest is also noticeably sans advertisements which helps keep the site simplistic.

Sense of Community

While the Pinterest community is 80% female, pinboards themselves may range from being inspirational to funny but don’t come with the Facebook-induced subtext of “pay attention to how awesome I am!” You can like a photo and repin it but the pinning is done to reflect the idea of how awesome it would be to have the pin-created world come to life. Whether or not your audience likes it doesn’t matter- you don’t rely on numbers of followers to enable you to show off your personality.

The New Year offers a clean slate and a time to reflect on the changes you want or need in order to enhance your business. Take some time to look at your successes and failures over the past year. What went right and what went wrong? Have you considered what changes you want to implement in 2012?

Here are 10 New Year’s resolutions for your business:

Resolution 1: Get a Handle on your Taxes

With the New Year fast approaching, it is important to get a firm handle on your taxes. To claim certain tax benefits, you need to act no later than Dec. 31. According to the IRS, here are “Six Year-End Tips to Reduce 2011 Taxes:”

Install Energy-Efficient Home Improvements

Make Charitable Contributions

Consider a Portfolio Adjustment

Contribute the Maximum to Retirement Accounts

Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution

Don’t Overlook the Small Business Health Care Tax Credit

Resolution 2: Understand Your Finances

This is extremely important for the health of your business. As a new or growing business, you need to be diligent about your finances. The NUMBER ONE reason that businesses fail is due to lack of control over finances.

Some experts suggest reviewing your profit and loss statements, balance sheets and cash flow reports on a monthly basis. To manage this, there is accounting software such as QuickBooks specifically for small businesses. Also, hiring a CPA or bookkeeper can be a wise investment.

Resolution 3: Create a Monthly Budget

This is crucial to controlling your monthly expenses. By creating a budget, forces you to examine your income and expenditures to track how much money you make and spend. Of course your living expenses, i.e., mortgage, utilities, vehicles, insurance payments and food are a must, but additional payments should be allocated to pay off bad debt.

A few handy financial tools:

HomeBudget is an expense tracker designed to help you budget, track and control your monthly expenses at home.

Moneytrackin is a free online web application that allows you to track all your expenses and income easily and without effort, thus allowing you to have a clear view of your financial situation. It intends to be a simple yet powerful online budget management tool.

MySpendingPlan is an online tool that provides consumers with the latest tools to help them manage their personal finances track their budgets, save money and keep up on the latest information about managing money and leading a better financial life.

Resolution 4: Get Out of Debt

Easy to say, difficult to do! According to some experts, Americans charge over one trillion dollars per year using Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. For many, money is a big source of stress; and it doesn’t help that we’ve had to deal with economic issues over the past few years. This coming year, make it a priority to resolve your money woes. To get started check out the amazing series Courtney Wiley wrote, starting with My Journey Out of Debt: How This Single Mom Paid Off $93,000 in Less Than Three Years.

Resolution 5: Set Specific Time Management Goals

Why do you want to set specific goals to manage your time effectively? Well, setting simple goals will force you to plan your time wisely, thus, allowing you to get a sense of achievement and reduce work and life stress. For example, if spending time with your family is important, try working fewer hours on Friday so that you can honor that goal.

By scheduling your time based on your goals, you can assess if your goals truly align with the core values, both professionally and personally. If you find that your goals are out of align, then you are able to identify key areas that need adjusting before they get out of control.

Resolution 6: Delegate!

As your business grows, so should your ‘tight grip’ on controlling every aspect of it. The worst thing that you can do is become a slave to your business. This attitude can cripple you! I know this first hand; as a former owner of a building maintenance company; I was president, HR generalist, payroll specialist, trainer, janitor, sales woman and more! It took me a while to realize that not only could I not effectively wear every hat, but in order to grow and regain my sanity, I had to trust others.

It is important that you delegate non-core business tasks to your staff or consider outsourcing. Play on the strengths of others. The lack of delegation will stifle your growth, or worse, cause you to run your business and yourself into a pit fall.

Resolution 7: Prioritize your Day

It is essential that you start your day with a ‘to do’ list. It doesn’t matter if your business is small or if you run a large corporation, having a daily plan will keep you on track in effectively running your business. Start your day by scheduling uninterrupted time to plan and create your list of tasks for that day, and rank your list in order of priority. For example, if you have 10 tasks on your list, of those, how many do you need to complete? Can you save the least important tasks for another time?

If you don’t accomplish all the tasks from your ‘to do’ list, it doesn’t mean you are having problems managing your time. It simply means that you only have limited time per day to get everything done and you may be trying to accomplish more tasks than you have time in the day.

To manage and prioritize my time, I rely on Microsoft Outlook’s calendar and task manager to plan my personal and business schedule. I then sync Microsoft Outlook to my I Phone. This helps me to stay on task and set priorities for my daily activities. Find what works for you and make it a daily habit to have a productive and organized day!

Resolution 8: Network Religiously

A successful way to promote your business is through networking. You are in business to grow, so make networking a key part of your marketing strategy so that you position yourself to connect with the right people.

Networking is a lifestyle in which you need to incorporate onto your “To Do” list. By networking, you are developing your social skills by engaging or interacting in an informal gathering to communicate with others for mutual assistance or support. By acquainting yourself with other business owners or executives, you are building meaningful relationships. There are many organizations that you can become involved in such as the Chamber of Commerce, Business Network International (BNI), online communities or a professional organization related to your industry.

Resolution 9: Know your Credit Profile

Do you know how important it is to establish business credit profile? According to some industry experts, “fewer than 10 percent of all entrepreneurs know about or truly understand how business credit is established and tracked-and how it affects their lives and businesses.”

Make sure you contact the major business credit bureaus that compile and provide copies of your credit reports. For a list of business credit reporting agencies, here’s an informative article by Marco Carbajo, “Top 10 Business Credit Bureaus.”

Resolution 10: Spend More Time with Family and Friends

An important reason we go into business is the idea of being flexible with our time. So, the idea of having time for family and friends seems like it should be a no-brainer, right? According to recent polls conducted by General Nutrition Centers, Quicken, and others shows that more than 50% of Americans vow to appreciate loved ones and spend more time with family and friends this year.

You have control over your time, so make sure that you balance work and life to be able to spend it with those that are important to you.

Last but not least…

If it’s not working, drop it quickly.

Don’t waste your time or invest any unnecessary energy nursing something that isn’t working for your business. Time = Money and in our current economic crisis, both are a very precious commodity that a small business can’t afford to gamble with. Move on and don’t look back!

By incorporating these simple yet effective strategies, you can position your business for significant growth. Here’s looking at a great 2012!

Locally and globally, we continue to see that the nature of jobs is profoundly changing, and what we do in order to earn our incomes, and how we do it, will never be the same. In the evolving world of work, everything is in motion.

Technology is radically changing the nature of work — e.g., artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, biometric security, sensor-driven smart buildings, unified communications, and other breakthroughs like the ability for people to wear or even implant digital devices. According to initial findings from CoreNet Global‘s comprehensive and futuristic look at the workplace, here are some of the ways in which the workplace of 2020 will change:

BYOT

: More employees will “bring their own technology” with them to work, and the workplace will shift to wherever an employee is located. BYOT will effect the size and design of the corporate office, as fewer square feet per employee will be needed.

Biometric-Based Security

: Personal, biological identifiers will provide employees access to important information, thereby representing another breakthrough for changing the way we work.

Predictive Modeling

: Predictive modeling technologies will be used to more effectively forecast future demand for office space, among many other things. As these techniques continue to improve, they are increasingly driving efficiency, creating opportunities for increased sales, improving risk management, and mitigating strategic risks.

Brick and Mortar Offices Take a Back Seat

: Work will increasingly go to where people are located; people won’t necessarily go to work. But that won’t diminish the importance of place, because people and companies alike, still need human interaction to thrive.

All of this means there will have to be evolutionary change, if not revolutionary change, in the way people are prepared for work, for life, and for life between jobs and after work.

If you are a woman in business, you need to incorporate online videos into your social media marketing strategy. By doing so, increases brand awareness and creates viewer action leading to more inquiries and sales. In fact, according to Online Video Marketing Statistics, adding video to small business profiles:

Increases number of business profile views more than 100%

Increases number of profile clicks more than 30%

Increases number of calls generated by more than 18%

For the past several months, I’ve had creating a welcome video for my blog and online community on my ‘to do’ list but have avoided it like the plague. Why? Well, just the sheer thought of having a video of myself floating out there in cyber space is nerving. After reading such staggering statistics on the importance of video marketing to small businesses… AND knowing that Google loves VIDEOS, that is, Forrester Research has reported that websites with video are 50 times more likely to gain an organic first page ranking, I realized that it’s time to stop procrastinating and get down to the business of video marketing.

While researching, I found three inexpensive ways to create professional videos and handy tools to help you in the process:

3 Inexpensive Ways to Create Your Video

Smart Phone: depending on your mobile device, the quality might not be as sharp but this is a great way to capture a quick or impromptu video any time. The iPhone 4 has a great built-in video camera which you can launch, shoot and edit on the go. I use it regularly to record my kids sporting events.

Web Cam: though you can purchase an external webcam, most new computers have this feature built in. This is an easy way to create tutorials, interviews or ‘how to’ videos or vlogs. My kids and I have created a dozen or so silly videos using our webcam.

Screen Recording Software: when searching for online software, you will find a number of free and fee-based screen recording software solutions available.

Camtasia Studio: this software allows you to easily generate effective videos that help you train, teach, and sell and more. A free trial is available.

CamStudio: this free software download allows you to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files.

Online Teleprompter

Cue Prompter: a free teleprompter/autocue service.

Easy Prompter: a free teleprompter service that is compatible with most plugins, browser versions and special hardware, etc.

Screen Shot Software

Jing: using screenshots is a great way to enhance your fast-paced online conversations. Jing allows you to create images and videos of what you see on your computer screen. For up to 5 minute videos, you can use the free version or simply upgrade!

Video Hosting Services

Daily Motion: one of the leading sites for sharing videos, attracting over 114 million unique monthly visitors

Vidler: a platform for video publishers; built by a team of talented developers, designers and architects. A free version is available for personal use.

Vimeo: created by filmmakers and video creators who wanted to share their creative work, along with intimate personal moments of their everyday life.

Now that you’ve created your online videos, it’s time to upload them to your free YouTube channel. Why use YouTube? Well, by posting your video on YouTube will give you access to the channel’s 20 million monthly visitors.

In conclusion, video marketing is a powerful way to brand your business. By implementing into your plan, provides you with opportunities to engage potential new customers 24/7.

In a digitized professional world, vital communication often takes place via e-mail and social media. The effect of said technology on the written word has been paradoxical: the internet has at once elevated the importance of written communication while loosening our writing standards.

When it comes to business writing, fluid prose and grammar are nonetheless paramount. Your writing is a reflection of you and, thanks to the internet, in may be the first impression – and in some cases, the only impression – someone will have of you.

Not long ago, I pitched an idea to a magazine, signed a writer’s contract, wrote and revised the article and received payment without ever meeting the editor or hearing her voice on the phone.

With this anecdote mind, here are some tips for making your written web presence memorable and effective.

Purge the Following Words/Phrases from Your Writing:

A Lot, Many, Plenty and Several – Avoid these words and phrases when quantifying. They are vague and do not contribute to your cover letter/resume/business pitch. Be specific; how many is many?

Utilize – This word suggests that you are trying too hard to impress; stick to “use.”

I wanted to… – Too often I see friends and colleagues begin e-mails with “I wanted to ask” or something similar. Because you are writing in the present, it’s awkward to open with a phrase in the past tense. A better way to begin is, “I am writing to inquire about….”

Very and really – Used to create emphasis, these words actually muddle your message and are really not very effective. (See what I mean?)

Befriend a Thesaurus

Repetition can be an effective poetic device, but when it comes to day-to-day writing, the same word over and over again in the span of a few paragraphs can make your message sound mundane. This is where a thesaurus (dictionary of synonyms) comes in handy.

There is, however, a caveat: your reader can tell when you use a word that you do not really understand the meaning of. Avoid using terms that you do not fully grasp in an attempt to amp up your writing; it has the opposite effect. Instead, research how the word in question is used in various contexts and incorporate new words into your repertoire gradually.

Denotation vs. Connotation

A word’s denotation is its dictionary definition; connotation refers to the secondary meanings words acquire through associations. Words can have similar denotations, but significantly different connotations (i.e. slim vs. skinny; cheap vs. frugal). Be sure you understand both the denotation as well as connotation of the words you use.

You will be surprised how conveying your thoughts in 140 characters or less sharpens your writing abilities. Being clear, concise and to the point is an asset when it comes to written business exchanges.

Given the current economic climate, flexible and “alternative” staffing arrangements have – in many cases – proliferated. Rather than looking for full-time, permanent employment, many people are looking instead at multiple temporary jobs. These jobs have acquired new currency in this recession, especially among white-collar job seekers, as they cast about for work of any kind and companies remain cautious about permanent hiring.

While the current state of employment may be rendering job security obsolete, many people in the workforce don’t necessarily view that as a bad thing. Independent workers now comprise 30% of the workforce, and, as Gen Ys increasingly desire professional flexibility, co-working spaces are becoming much more popular and in-demand.

As a result, a number of new apps and sites that facilitate the “freelance lifestyle” are thriving:

Let’s Meet and Work

The “coffice” has become a common urban staple. Enter Let’s Meet and Work, an app which maps public venues (coffee shops, galleries, museums, book stores) that double as efficient work spaces. Anyone with knowledge of a space can suggest it for the respective city’s map by filling out a recommendation form.

Desktime

Desktime caters to a workforce without HR departments. The site partners up freelancers searching for a place to work with available co-working spaces. Listings include desks or entire offices, conference rooms, and other shared spaces that can be rented by the day, week or month.

Loosecubes

“Loosecubes differentiates itself by emphasizing the valuable professional connections facilitated through co-working establishments—a distinction that’s made in the service’s self-identification as a ‘community marketplace,’” according to Trend Central. However, in order to post and respond to listings on the site, users must first set up a profile identifying their primary profession, a description of their “work vibe” (options include “hacker,” “fratty” and “awesome”), whether or not they are accepting new work and location.

While this has been a growing trend for some time, there are now serious economic and technological reasons driving the arrangement. And perhaps this is indicative of a more basic human need, too — the need to be around other people. No matter how much we connect via mobile phones, email, texting, social media sites like Facebook or through webinars, many people still need to be around others for ideas, encouragement and conversation.

Run Your Small Business From Anywhere: 3 Sites That Connect You to Co-Working Spaces is a post from: She Takes on the World

Being 30,000 feet in the air has never been more affordable, comfortable or glamorous as it is now. With a wide variety of airlines for both domestic and international flights available all with Wi-Fi, complimentary beverages and even with bags that can be checked in for free, being in flight for the businesswoman is becoming the preferred method of travel. It’s even making a return to television with ABC’s debut of Pam Am coming out, a series based on the Pan American World Airways airline in the ’60s. Maybe the next time you’re on board, this show will be a part of the in-flight entertainment!

Different airlines cater to different personalities. The modern businesswoman today comes in all sorts of styles. A working mom may have to bring her children along on the flight and juggle their needs in addition to making sure they don’t disrupt the rest of the passengers. Social media gurus are cool with flying no matter how long it takes so long as there is plenty of Wi-Fi available for the iPads. Tall ladies want extra leg room in their aisle so that their legs aren’t too cramped. If you’re flying overseas, you’ll want to make sure that the flight includes friendly and attentive stewardesses. No matter what style you are though, we all want the same things out of any flight: a safe ride that is fast and offers plenty of comfort. As a frequent flyer of many airlines over the years, I’ve got a list of the ones that are both tried and true handy.

Virgin America

This one just goes above and beyond when it comes to great service. Whether you’re flying with first class, main cabin select, or main cabin, you still get great amenities included. Passengers who fly first class with Virgin get two free checked in bags and custom leather seats that provide massaging capabilities. Even main cabin still gets plenty of perks- on-demand movies and Wi-Fi with food and beverages are all included. Virgin only flies to a select number of cities though so make sure that your departure and return cities are both on the list before you book your flight!

JetBlue

This one offers a great balance of everything all at once. Combined with a fun and youthful feel, JetBlue lives by the motto “our standards beat their extras.” First bag checked in flies free and the airline is known for advertising plenty of legroom, unlimited snacks and drinks, and DirecTV and SiriusXM radio.
Whether you are being interviewed on TV, or presenting on video camera, your aim is to create a positive experience for your viewers, and put them at ease.

This means reducing anything that could create a visual barrier (consciously or subconsciously) between you and your audience. From my experience, I have seen many people who are appear very confident in real life, suddenly buckle or lose their nerve when looking into the cold staring eye of the camera lens. The camera seems to draw out and magnify their nervous mannerisms or underlying tension.

Presenting to camera requires a completely different skill-set from public speaking or presenting on stage – a fact that very few people seem to be aware of. This is due to the technical requirements demanded by the camera (more on this in future articles).

Here are a few crucial tips to prevent you from making some all too common body language mistakes

Hand to face gestures

In particular, it is hard to know what to do with your hands when you are being filmed. Do whatever it takes – even sit on your hands if you have to, but dont make any hand to face gestures!

Yes, you can still use your hands to gesture, but ensure that your camera framing is in a medium to close-shot so that your hands don’t monopolize the screen.

High profile public officials, TV presenters and interviewers have been trained to avoid such things when addressing their audience. Observe them closely, and you will see that they rarely touch their face.

Also, from a technical perspective, some video cameras have difficulty tracking hand gestures – resulting in a blurred effect on-screen.

Many hand to face gestures convey subconscious meanings that you may not be aware of:

Eye rubbing – Associated with deception, or not liking a situation or person

Nose touching – A common signal for not telling the truth, lack of sincerity

Hair touching (twirling your hair) – In women this can signal low confidence, needing reassurance, or even flirting – all of which weaken the impact of your message

Remember however, that body language is subjective and is open to interpretation. It differs across many cultures. You could in fact have an itchy eye, or a runny nose – but fight the urge and make an effort to save the itching and rubbing until after you have finished filming.

What other body language mannerisms have you found to be distracting or off-putting when viewing online videos?
