Google Voice, now available for mobile, is set to disrupt and modernize how we communicate. Google will give you one number that you will be able to sync to your home phone, mobile, VoIP, and business lines so that people can reach you wherever you want to be reached.
All of your lines will be linked to one voicemail and you can store messages indefinitely. You can organize your contacts into groups and record different greetings for different groups which I think is a great feature for business owners. Text messages are stored and can be filtered similarly to Gmail. Google Voice also offers an alternative for Skypers. I use Skype right now for business calls but I have to make the call from my computer which can sometimes be an inconvenience. Being able to make international calls at very low rates through my BlackBerry via Google Voice will be great. Another useful feature for businesses is free conference calling.
It sounds like a pretty amazing service but I do have some concerns. What happens when the service goes down? There have been times when I have not been able to access Gmail for several hours much to my frustration. I would not want my Google number to stop working for a few hours and people not be able to reach me. And it’s not like you can call customer service when this happens! I am also concerned about my privacy since voicemails are recorded through the service and archived by Google.
Google is slowly rolling out the service so they can deal with any issues that may arise. Right now you need an invitation which could take a few weeks to receive. To request an invitation or learn more, click here.
What do you think about Google Voice? Have you tried it? Do the pros outweigh the cons?
